Research, consultation, planning, communications
A motorway from the eastern suburbs to downtown Auckland was first planned in the 1950s but for various reasons has never been built. In 2001 a team comprising MWH, Zomac Planning, Boffa Miskell and Dialogue was commissioned to undertake the first stage of the Eastern Corridor Strategy Study. Dialogue’s responsibilities were primarily in consultation and social impact assessment, as well as participating in the strategy development.
The goal of the strategy was “to meet local and regional demands for the movement of people and goods and services through the corridor, while minimising impacts on the natural and physical resources and maximising its social, economic and cultural value to the well-being of the community.”
The study concluded that:
there was a demonstrable need for enhanced transport services in Eastern Corridor
even greatly enhanced public transport would not alone meet the demands or address the issues
the preferred solution was a staged, multi-modal expressway with a dedicated public transport facility
the new expressway would form a significant part of the regional roading network.
